It was a very fun match and I want to thank the new shooters that came to the match. Surrill and I both had fun poking at one another. We’ll do it again.

Guys:
I have been working on a couple rifles the past few days and it’s very easy to get over heated. The range temp was 96 degrees yesterday. I was soaking wet in ten minutesJust a quick reminder for everyone, Drink plenty of Fluids, take about 15 mins and get in the air conditioned area to cool off if you have any light headed or dizzy…[Read more]

I have used many different shields. I agree with the drawing that the best shape is the curved one on the right.
I make mine out of old window blinds. I think the last one I bought at a cheaper than dirt for about 5 bucks. Had enough panels to make 20 mirage shields -

If you are looking for a new rifle for the upcoming hunting season I have a good selection bought at an estate sale. A friend of mine has lost his vision and had been collecting for 70 years. He gave a rifle to everyone of his grand kids and to a few ole shooting buddies of which most were custom built target rifles. These I have are pretty much…[Read more]

Temperature greatly affects your reloads. I shoot a midrange load in most of my rifles that is tuned to the middle of the node using a ladder test method of load selection. Therefore for me, when the temperature changes I’m still pretty close to my reasonance barrel frequency.I know guys that load to the maximum pressure that their…[Read more]

Guys: Here’s some information from one of the shooting schools out in Texas. Every year a group of friends head out to a ranch for a friendly two man team match which last 2 1/2 days. It’s hot dry and dusty. Yes it’s also windy. I say again , WINDY. Just after daylight on most days 10-12 mph. By 9 am it’s up to 15-17 and by noon over 20 mph…[Read more]

Roland,
Great Topic.I too like a windy day. Some of the guys we shoot with know that I’m a mirage shooter. I have been for years. At some point, I should try to explain mirage shooting and the trusty mirage boards that I use to use when shooting point blank benchrest. I’ll work on putting something together.

My shooting library is divided into sections on shooting, gunsmithing, reloading, ballistics, history, rifles and miscellaneous topics. I’ve gone through the shooting section and put together a list of some useful books, many are out of print but can be found through http://www.abebooks.com others are available through the usual shooting suppliers like…[Read more]

Ron Lewis started the topic How to: Trigger Control, it's really Important in the forum Reese Bottom Chat Room 11 years, 4 months ago
At the last match I was asked by an unnamed shooter ” Ron, Why are you still looking down range after your shot. It’s actually part of the method by which I shoot every shot. Just like a golf instructor teaches to keep your head down after the swing. It’s follow through of my trigger pull.
What is meant by Follow Through and what is the technique…[Read more]

Ron Lewis started the topic How to: Get Setup on the Bench in the forum Reese Bottom Chat Room 11 years, 4 months ago
Here’s a good starting point:
If you are new to shooting off the bench, you may not know that setting up the rests plays a significant role in accuracy — “significant” here meaning tenths of inches, not hundredths. Some things I know; some I only suspect, & I’ll try to keep them separate. If anybody can confirm or deny the guesses, that would b…[Read more]

Ron Lewis replied to the topic Load development in the forum Reese Bottom Chat Room 11 years, 4 months ago
Good morning fellow shooters:
Here’s how I do it: Generally speaking if I’m working up a load then I probably am breaking in a new barrel. Just as Roland said, I spent most of my time wearing out a barrel with the first load that I settle on and rarely do I change that load. The past couple years has forced me to vary this plan somewhat because…[Read more] -

Wynne,
I could not commend you enough on the match we shot on Saturday. The weather was beautiful and the turn out for the match was amazing. It was a good family outing for Little Ronald and I and a fear that we may have unleashed the Tiger in that little guy. He was so proud to win the pocket knife. He’s got a small collection started by an old…[Read more]

Looking for a couple bird guns.
Already have a 870 youth model. If you have one you might consider parting with, I’m trying to gather up a few to teach some folks how to shoot skeet.

New Shooter Advice:
I certainly will be the first one to say that I continue to learn something new at almost every match. I’m still having a lot of fun shooting and is pretty much the only hobby that I work to improve upon on an ongoing basis. I shot my first rifle match in Nov 1977 at the Police range below the dam at Lake Tuscaloosa. I r…[Read more]
