ParticipantI know we all have expensive comp rigs but what about hunting rifles? Handguns? Etc…..
I have a tactical rifle I had chambered with my dasher reamer and shoot 108eldm. I use old brass from my comp rifle and it works pretty well!
My other is a custom 7stw, it’s a lazer beam. We mainly hunt long bean/corn fields around here so I don’t have to use a rangefinder anymore. 150gr nosler accubonds @ 3575fps. It’s spicy and the brass doesn’t last long. Lol. It’s ridiculously accurate and not much of any tracking jobs required.
Mr. Richard, my dad loves to shoot pistols like you do, do you have any for hunting?
Let’s hear what you fellas favorite cartridges are! -

ParticipantBarry my approach to hunting was I always wanted to see how close I could kill them not how far I could kill him to me that was the Challenge probably have not killed a deer in over 30 years with a rifle. I hunted for years with only a pistol started with a Ruger single action 357 mag then the same in 44 mag With open sights. Later with a Contender in both 30 Herritt and 300 Blackout with a red dot sight, Then later to just bow hunting all hunting season mainly with a recurve. Later I designed and built a a take down recurve in my basement that I hunted with killing many deer along with two black bear that I killed in Canada, I also used it hunting caribou in Alaska but was Unsuccessful for that, along with Moose in Newfoundland but ended us getting my moose with a rifle. I even hunted squirrels using A Ruger Charger. After my stroke I stopped hunting all together because I could no longer hunt the way I loved. So other than a bow yes handguns were what I gun hunted with.
I guess I can stop rambling now I think I answered your question
Tell your dad to enjoy the challenge it’s more rewarding -

ParticipantFor me it is a a Browning A bolt medallion factory chambered in 284 Win or a custom 7mm-08. Bought the 284 in ‘96 and that’s what got me started reloading cause good factory 284 ammo was hard to find. Don’t hunt pistol anymore but I’ve had my share of custom Encore and Contender pistols. Hard to beat a Contender in 7X30 Waters for whitetails. Guess y’all can tell I’m kinda partial to the 7mm for hunting rifles or pistols

ParticipantBergara wilderness terrain 300win mag or a Diamondback DB10 308. I’m not happy with the bergara but it is what it is until I can afford something else.

InactiveBarry, I hunt very little, but when I go I use my old Savage 308 Winchester, It’s a 20″ heavy barrel LE model that I’ve been shooting for years. That Savage has put a lot of deer on the table and I always shoot the 168 or 175 Sierra HPBT bullet, mostly neck shots for a one shot one kill kind of hunt, that way they drop like a rock. I have hunted with a 300 Win Mag in the past but that’s a little to much for the deer we have in the south, but it works fine for the mid range shots I’ve taken with some of the heavy match bullets. The 208 A-Max in the 300 Win Mag has done very well for me in the past.
