ParticipantI agree with the mirage but was it not as bad for the FTR guys or did they they do a better job adjusting for it than us open guys?

ParticipantAccording to Surrell, his 308 will shoot through any condition! Lol. In all seriousness, not sure what the conditions were when they shot but I did see a lot of boils and pickups and that will definitely cause vertical. I was testing a couple different loads in my rifle and I know to stay away from all of them because my targets reflected that. The mirage didn’t affect my score one way or the other but that’s what I saw when I was looking through my spotting scope.
One question I’ve always wondered though….it seems when your rifle is in tune you don’t have to fight anything really, it just shoots. So how much of it is mirage and how much of it is the shooter not being able to hold well enough with a bad sight picture or the rifle not being in an optimal tune, or both? Some ppl just seem to be able to shoot through it. -

ParticipantSo Barry if I’m reading your post right you’re saying that your load development effected your score more than the mirage? And with a well tuned load the mirage should have little or no effect on your score?
And you didn’t shoot any proven loads during the match and your score reflected that. Just trying to learn about these things. -

ParticipantI tried one different variable in each string to see if I could find something better than my “go to” load I usually shoot. One string was a different neck tension. One was a lower powder charge and the last was the hotter powder charge. The loads ended up being terrible so the mirage was not a factor for me.
It seems like everywhere I go there’s always several ppl that have rifles that just hammer and if you ask them if the mirage affected their holds or score they’d probably say no. If that’s the case, the only explanations are that a shooter manages it well or the rifle is tuned so well that it helps mitigate the effects of the mirage or both. -

KeymasterI am not a good one to be talking about conditions, but I do know that things often change quickly at Reese Bottom. I also think that a good shooter has to make the best of his situation during his relay time. At most ranges, shooters in a division all shoot their relays at the same time. At Reese Bottom with only the four targets, shooters in the same division might shoot their same relay an hour or more apart. We will call it ‘the luck of the draw’ and we know it going in. I think it was the September match that my third target was a lot clearer than was the second target. Good to always bale hay on the first relay at Reese Bottom. Remember also, that at 1000 yards the good shooter is looking just above ground from 425 yards to 600 yards and again from 800 yards all the way to the target. I have been told that mirage is worst just above the ground. If you get it figured out, please let us all in on the secret. WWE
