Tyler and I both run tuners on our rifles and we had quite a few questions about them but first I’d like to ask, do you think they’re a novelty item? Maybe they work? Maybe they don’t? Do you want to try one? Are they just something else to spend money on?
I was pretty skeptical about tuners when I started putting them on my barrels a couple years ago. Reason being, I’ve shot some rimfire benchrest and tuners are a necessity to help get the vertical out of a rifle because obviously you can’t reload for them. Side note, yes I know cutting edge has made rimfire reloading possible but I think it’s more for ELR type rimfire. Ok, so with centerfire most reloaders will adjust powder charge to help tune vertical out but what happens when you travel or the temps are drastically different or you’re sitting on the bottom or top of a node? I’m sure we’ve all heard of ppl popping primers or having heavy bolt lift, etc or the gun just groups like buckshot. Now I’m not saying a tuner will make a bad load shoot good because it won’t but I do think it can help salvage a match or a weekend of shooting but you have to practice and test with it to know exactly what to do! There are quite a few tuners on the market and I think some are better than others so I’m not going to bash any particular product but I will say do your research and call and ask what sets one tuner apart from another. You can probably search on accurate shooter and find more info than you can go through. Lol. I have not ran a tuner on my 6mm’s but I do run them on my 7 and 30cal.
Let’s hear some thoughts on whether or not this is something you’d consider or why you wouldn’t.

Again very timely post I just back over the summer learned about tuners, and you post has explained it more. Unfortunately as you will see me and a couple of others or the only ones that visit this site other than to register to shoot or see the result. Back to tuners so it’s something though experimenting you can learn to adjust for match day condition to tune your load to those conditions kinda replaces those us use to load at the range during a match. I guess my question is if all had tuners then it would come down to who make the best tuner adjustment that day. I can see if someone travel to different matches all over to deferent temps and conditions they one be a big plus and another question do you make adjustments during a match in between relays?
      Thanks for sharing

Barry let me 1st say things that you and Tyler have share are great! I’m the type person that reads, filters take part I think would help me and then modifi to fit what and how I shoot. You both have given me Ideas moving forward that could be very helpful and thank y’all both for that. Do I see a tuner in my near future probably not but there again I don’t see a full grown gun in my future but you never know lol my days of traveling and multiple day match is over so that’s another reason. The Competition at RB has jumped a up a notch over the last couple years part because of new young blood and after we started shooting 1k people realize you better get er tuned if your going to shoot 1K and that really boosted the 600 scores.
I’m thinking we may need a senior’s division
Thanks again and I’m sorry I’m the only one that taking time to read and rely to y’all” s post keep them coming y’all my help me become a well above avg. shooter

I run a ATS tuner on my one cz457 22lr and it has tightened it up but if I change lot# or manufacturer I have to re-adjust to me that is about the same for centerfire and different nodes.

They will keep you in tune but they won’t make a 3/4in rifle shoot in the .2s

Yup. Worth it. Good insurance. In SR BR, those guys can load between strings, and they are the pinnacle of accuracy and precision. We’ve got no such luxury.

And yes, it can make a .75 min gun into a .2 min gun… if it was properly tuned and capable of .2 to begin with. I can take mine completely out of tune… about 1moa, and then put it back in. I’m speaking only of ezells, as I’ve never used any others. It won’t polish a turd, but I’ve never moved seating depth or powder charge on my past few barrels just to see if I could get away with just the tuner.

Larry, that sounds like it’s working as intended. I worked with a girl that was a collegiate and Olympic shooter… the really fancy 22 rifles with the peel sights. She would send her gun somewhere and buy a pallet of whichever lot shot the best. You and I may not be able to do that, but now we’ve got tuners to replicate some of it.

These 2 pictures are the same day, with a tuner adjustment between them. My name is blurred because I posted elsewhere.

Better 2nd pic. You go from a nice tight little wad with a flyer to one that takes the whole 10 ring.

      3 downsides that I’ve found:

You’ve got to make sure it’s not loose. I threw away a state match a couple of years back because my set screws came loose.

You’ve got to shoot and test in different weather conditions to see which way to turn it and when.

It’s sort of a pain to thread and fit. It’s not bad, just tedious.

Well Mr. Richard brought it up what will be the cut off age for the old timers class?
I was one who asked Barry and Tyler a lot of questions about the tuners and have one on one of my rifles. It shot really good while tuning and when I shot it at Reese Bottom the lock screws came loose and all went to crap, I didn’t realize until I got home, while piddling with it I found the tuner loose and rotated almost a full turn. Mine is a Harrell’s tuner. I know to keep watch now. I put one on a 22rf to play with and I am learning some, they do make a difference. It’s fun to see just what it can do.

Great test- shows exactly what you look for on target.
