KeymasterWe used to have a small-town weekly newspaper that was accused of not having much content. At that time there was an older gentleman in town that said he could eat a head of lettuce and read the newspaper and go to bed with nothing on his stomach and nothing on his mind. Please apply to my next couple of post. After the match last Saturday, Kevin Stewart, who only dropped one point in the last two matches said “Why can’t I do that well in the first three matches.” I told him that I sure don’t have an answer, but the conversation got me thinking [which is dangerous] I have a small weather station in the bathroom and Saturday about 6 am it registered 52′ and when I got home around 2:30 it registered 84′ an increase of 34′. I don’t know about you but for me at a match I have tried to keep all of my rounds as close as possible to the same. I know that gun handling, condition reading, and other things come into play while shooting matches, but is it possible that the change in temperature brought Kevin’s load into better tune? Surely a better tuned rifle is easier to shoot. Mr. Richard mentioned in his report that he had experimented with seating depth with no luck, and I was wondering if any of you good shooters would admit to experimenting with other load variables, say powder charge or neck tension, between matches? If you are guilty, please feel free to respond. WWE

KeymasterWhile looking around into the data collected by Shotmarker, something else caught my attention. For privacy purposes, lol, I will not give out the actual velocity numbers but am going to call names. At the match last Saturday, the average speed of Barry’s #3 target was 12 fps slower than his #2 target. The avg. speed of Scott’s #3 target was 6 fps slower than his #2 target. The avg. speed of Steve’s #3 target was 10 feet per second slower than his #2 target. I did not check everyone’s targets but this info is one good shooter from each division. I’m guessing this is over the 10:15 to 11:45 time period and would think that the temperature increased over this same time period. I have always thought that an increase in temperature should push the velocity upward. This is not offered as a scientific experiment but got me wondering if Reese Bottom has an undetectable haint condition. Just wondering, WWE

KeymasterPlease be advised, be aware of your rifle scope magnification at all times and do not allow it to hinder your shooting. It is hard to hold off two rings if you cannot see the ring. Below are my third match targets from February and May, three months apart. The first 17 shots on the February target were all shot on 80 power, and one should notice there are no two bullets similar to each other{buckshot} I must admit that I am still disgusted with myself for this, but I do think that I learned something here. The third match target from May was shot approx. the same time of day but on 20 powers. I know that is low power, but I was trying to get away from 80 power. Somewhere in between may work better but the group seemed to have a purpose. Okay, Suze and I have been at the beach long enough that I must have gotten bored. Anyway, do not forget your lettuce and we look forward to seeing a good crowd for the 600-yard match in June. WWE

KStewartParticipantI agree that the temperature can make a difference but for some reason the 2nd relay is my gremlin. I was able to get the rifle back in tune on the last relay’s. I still got to learn when to shoot and most importantly when not to shoot in certain conditions. It’s still fun to burn powder win or lose and be around good folks.

Richard SlatonParticipantI’m a tinker Ive alway been and yes I’ve nearly alway tried something different every time I go shoot and a lot of time it bits me in the butt!
But I also think this game we play is as much mental as it is what we shoot and what we shoot out of it. Prime example the load I shot in relay 1 and 3 my best two relays the first shots for record were 10’sand X’s that 2nd relay my worst ( also the one that adjusted seating debt) started with a 8 so I go into panic/ mad at myself mode with NO confidence in that bit me in the butt. This load with normal seating debt is the load I shoot back a few years go but it will not group less than 1/2 inch at 100 yards but shoots good at long distance my 200 14x at 600 and cleaning everything at the “Dasher Dome” was with this load. The load I’ve been shooting for the last few yards will put 5 touching at 100 but I cant shoot good scores at distance with it go figure. One thing that comes in to play is the load Saturday has a lot less recoil with NO make scope hitting my nose and sometimes drawing but so there comes that Mental thing again.
I’m sure none of this rambling answered your 1st. Question
Now your question about speed
Relay 1 2729
Relay 2 2730
Relay 3 2740
Not sure what my at target speed was for each of the three maybe you can pull that up
So as the day gets hotter my speed went up and I normally have to come down with scope elevation in my later relays.
Interesting fact on relay one my 199 that nine came shot 17, shot 16 speed was 2726 shot 17 was 2701 and 18 was 2750
So maybe that somewhat answers your question on speed though the day.
Not sure if this is where your going but I have seen/ heard watching the UTube V2 match about changing ammo between relays trying to get a rifle back in “tune”
Let me say I don’t mainly because I wouldn’t know how.
If you’re looking for something to do pull up my three relays for my at target speed and I would love to know at what speed shots 16,17 and 18 on relay 1 was.-

Richard SlatonParticipantThanks, now all these numbers have somewhat reaffirmed how important seating depth is if that made the spike in relay two. Like have said the second target had a tight group it was just not in the right place on the target and that’s on the shooter
now I like Mr. Wynne would like to hear from othersAt muzzle. At target
1st. 2729 es 49 1st. 1256 es 47 best relay
2nd 2730 es 40 2nd. 1272 es 92 worst relay
3rd. 2740. Es.44 3rd. 1266 es 59 -

BudbillftrParticipantAt the end of the day you need to be able to shoot 60 rounds in 90 degree temp .Tune in the conditions you shoot in the most you want it to get tighter as the day goes on .

scott partenParticipantCouple of things on this match. My third target was shot at 80, I could ‘see’ this one better than the first two. The 20 I shot were shorter than the first two targets after sorting (.090-.095 vs .095-.100).
I’ll tune again before the next one like Bill says above. I took my barrel off after the match and checked my chamber, it’s moved about .007 over about 600 rounds.
Thanks to Barry for telling me to turn the tuner after the first target. -

Barry HolcombParticipantI think this shows the importance of tuning your rifle for just about any condition. I think sometimes we don’t test enough to know where our rifle goes out of tune or what conditions make it go out of tune or miraculously make it shoot better as the day goes on. Sometimes I might be on the low side, sometimes on the high side of a node but I try to stay in the middle if possible to give me some leeway. Shooting narrow tune windows is also a dangerous game because we think it won’t move but all it takes is a little bit to be off or change and then it becomes a shotgun. Knowing when and how to adjust is a major part and unfortunately that comes from learning by dropping points or just sending a lot of rounds down range. I didn’t know there was any other way to learn than the hard way. lol.

KeymasterHis name is Boots, but they list him as Bill. Nathan is obviously better at shooting Xs than he is pigs. Congratulations fellows on your outstanding showing at the Sierra Cup. Lots of familiar names near the top. The results are posted on Accurate Shooter to see.
Remember, I have a pair of Walker Firemax earmuffs that have still not been claims by their owner. WWE
